Never mind. After an apt-get dist-upgrade the self-compiled kernels
now goes on to boot after showing the quoted error messages. I'm still
puzzled why the self-compiled kernel does not behave the same way as
the Mainline build from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/
when .config file was copied from one of them.
