linux-image-2.6.32-23-generic-pae failes to boot

it gets up to 4.7 seconds (in safe mode) around the part where it
enumerates memory regions and halts.
I can provide more information on the hardware of this system -- but
it's a Dell Optiplex 980 with i7 processor and 16GB of RAM.
I've had to "shift" boot to grub menu and pick 2.6.32-22-generic-pae
from previous kernel to boot up and continue to use the computer.
(there are a few reasons why I am 32-bit w/ PAE, namely some commercial
software).
( hopefully helps with .32-22 and .32-23 !? most of dmesg from
2.6.32-22-generic-pae / I noticed there are issues here, but it
boots: )
