Thanks for letting us know about this one.
3.8 mainline isn't entirely EOL... We're maintaining it as an "extended
mainline stable" branch. See here for more details about that:

Your nouveau fix is now queued up for 3.8-stable and also queued up (as
an SRU patch, so it will appear sooner) for Ubuntu Raring (thanks Brad).
