I do tag my releases (note the reference to "tags/focal-stable-v5.4.xx" in
the paragraph you replied to above and "tags/focal-stable-v5.4.54" in the
pull request body below). Those tags are indeed immutable references to
each pull request.
I *also* supply the stable-next branch, which always points to the most
recent focal-stable-v5.4.xx tag. By far, the simplest and most safe thing
for appliers to do is to just pull and apply the stable-next branch -- as
opposed to appliers fetching and applying the immutable tagged references
one by one. With the stable-next reference, the applier will only have to
pull and apply one stack of commits, which will usually apply to
master-next completely cleanly. If the applier instead chooses to apply
each individual tagged release (which are often pretty stale with respect
to master-next by the time the applier gets around to applying them), then
they will bump into rebase collisions that I've already researched and
resolved (in a subsequent tagged release).
