Ubuntu (kubuntu) | libfontconfig1

Summary: Circular dependancy issues with kernel development
                    tools.
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Keywords: kubuntu
          Severity: critical
          Priority: P1
         Component: libfontconfig1
        AssignedTo: debzilla at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: raid517 at fairadsl.co.uk
         QAContact: kubuntu-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

It seems it is impossible to install the normal kernel development tools. I therefore
cannot compile a kernel (nor indeed can I compile a number of other packages).

apt-get install libxft-dev libfontconfig1-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libfontconfig1-dev: Depends: libfontconfig1 (= 2.2.3-4ubuntu7) but 2.3.1-2 is to be
installed
E: Broken packages
root at linux1:/home/raid517 # apt-get install debhelper kernel-package libqt3-mt-dev
xlibs-dev libxtst-dev fakeroot rpm wget

debhelper is already the newest version.
kernel-package is already the newest version.
xlibs-dev is already the newest version.
libxtst-dev is already the newest version.
fakeroot is already the newest version.
rpm is already the newest version.
wget is already the newest version.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.

Trying to work around these dependancy issues requires that I remove Mplayer - which
all in all is not an optimal solution.

Please advise.
