Ok, so kynaptic not starting is a feature, not a bug? :)  

Thanks for posting though, I solved it by having kmenu run it as root (it is in
the properties somewhere), it asks for my password and voila.
To me, this does sound like a good default setting - instead of the way it (not)
works after an expert-install!?
