This was probably a configuration issue.
I am now using Amarok 1.3.7 but most importantly, after deleting all amarok-related files (~/.kde/config/ or somewhere like that) and disabling the lastfm plugin things seem to be much better.

Scanning the above collection takes less than 10 minutes and RAM usage
is much lower. The lastfm plugin works now for "submit" but not for
"similar artists" (crashes) but I guess that would be a different bug...
