Summary: cups breaks completely when editing server options with
kcontrol
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: cupsys

Hi!
I'm using Kubuntu 5.04 with KDE 3.4.1 and Kernel 2.6.13-rc2. USB support including USB printer support is
correctly enabled in the kernel. Printing with my Epson Stylus Color 880, connected using USB, worked perfectly
a few weeks ago. Then I tried to print from
another computer, but the cups server listened only to localhost. So I wanted to change this option using
kcontrol -> Peripherals -> Printers -> Print Server -> Configure Server.
After I changed the configuration, so that cups listens also to my network card, the server wouldn't start
anymore. I got the server to restart using the init-script, but since then I'm unable to print. I've completely
reinstalled cups, deleted all config files in /etc/cups, I tried *everything* (using KControl to add the
printer, which worked perfectly the first time, even using the GNOME tool to add my printer, I tried all
available drivers, ..), but nothing worked. I had two different errors in the log. The first one was:
"Could not convert job ... is ESP Ghostscript installed?" (it's not the exact message, as the log was emptied
and I had to remember it). ESP Ghostscript is installed, I checked that already.
The second "error" was something like: "Starting backend usb for job xy" .. nothing happened after that.
Sorry for not providing precise error messages.. logging simply doesn't work anymore. :-(
It seems, that my cups is *completely* broken now. It won't create a log file (it stopped logging sometime
yesterday) anymore, I can add and delete printers, but they are always in "stopped" state, when I print
something it puts the job into the queue, but nothing else happens.
Note that I didn't change anything manually in the config files! I only used the GUI of KDE. This shouldn't
happen in my opinion.. :)
If you need any more information or an ssh-shell, so you can look into the problem yourself, please contact me.
I'll be glad to help you! :)
Philipp
