I repeated the above with K3b, but after manually setting the write speed to
only 4x instead of the automatically detected 48x, and successfully burned the
ISO image.
My LITEON drive has 48x12x48 for the write(CD-R)/re-write(CD-RW)/read (CD-ROM)
speeds according to the manufacturer. Therefore, the automatically detected
speed of 48x by K3b was correct. I did not have any intensive processes going
on during CD burning on either occasion. Moreover, the Verbatim CD-R has a
1x--48x label implying that a 48x write was not wrong.
I have now set my default speed to 12x and think this should be safe. Perhaps a
"safety factor" should be applied to the default value suggested by K3b when
writing, but this could be done either automatically or manually, could vary
with drive and medium. The important point is that one should not make too many
CD-coasters!
I am copying this message to cdrtools at packages.debian.org as well.
