i tried to boot using expert mode with the kubuntu live cd, with a laptop without floppy disk. 
 
on the step about installing the floppy module or device driver (i don't remember), since the computer has no floppy drive, the boot 
process remains in a deadlock : it can not load, and it can not go through. therefore it is impossible to boot the kubuntu in expert 
mode in a computer without floppy disk. 
 
i believe it is the same in the standard ubuntu. at this stage, kde or gnome have not yet appeared
