I just downloaded and installed Kubuntu 
(http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/breezy/kubuntu-5.10-install-i386.iso)
It all installed fine and asked for my user-name and password but it never asked for 
a root password during installation, there is no way for me to gain root access or 
configure my system/install network devices.
