The problem is relatevely easy to solve.
Until now, greek language had its own file of combinations for dead keys, specified
in /usr/share/X11/locale/compose.dir as el_GR.UTF-8/Compose. Now the dead keys combinations for
producing characters with precombined accents is incorporated into the main en_US.UTF-8/Compose.
What needs to be done:
1) Locate the file compose.dir
2) change line 279 from: el_GR.UTF-8/Compose to: en_US.UTF-8/Compose
3) Restart X server
Credits go to Simos Xenitellis.
