It fixes the problem for me! I rebooted one more time and it still works. (Since my last comment, 
I reinstalled the system -- Hoary+dist-upgrade -- and since then admin mode had never been 
working). 
 
(I haven't been able to check the package, gpg gives me: 
  gpg: Signature made sam 29 oct 2005 18:08:00 EEST using DSA key ID DD4D5088  
  gpg: Can't check signature: public key not found 
 )
