I suspect you have the same behaviour as I do ie: kwin crashes and is
not restarted.

when you experience a crash try the following:
- go to console mode (CTRL-ALT-F1)
- log in with your kde user and do this :
$ export DISPLAY=:0 <ENTER>
$ kwin <ENTER>

- go back to graphic mode with ALT-F7

all should return back to normal.
If this fixes your problem then I can confirm your bug and kwin is the culprit, you'll have a kwin crash window somewhere when going back to X.
