I am having the same problem.  I'm using KDE3.5 packages, although I
think the same thing was happening with older version.

For me kmix always defaults to first channel, "PCM", which does not seem
to control anything noticeable, whereas it is the second channel,
"Front", that seems to be the master channel.  Selecting it as the
master channel works great, but as the original poster mentioned, a
reboot or just restart of kmix makes it forget the setting.

Is there a workaround for this?  Can I possibly manually edit some kmix
config file to make it remember?
