what's the output of
apt-cache policy libpoppler1-qt
apt-cache policy libpoppler1

?

Both should show 0.5.1-0ubuntu7 as installable candidate... 0.5.3-0ubuntu1 was never in dapper and can't be referenced from any package. we only got this a few days ago in edgy.
Is it possible that automatix or something else enabled the xgl repository for some time and you updated poppler?
