What version of ubuntu are you running?  What did you set the icons to?

On my kubuntu dapper amd64 with latest updates, I can make the icons
smaller (16pixels) and the grid is the right size.

On another note, it took me a while to find the setting for the icon
size.  It's in a very unintuitive place.  There should be SOME way to
get to it through the desktop's right click menu.
