Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/35460

Affects: arts (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:

I've just upgraded to Dapper from Breezy (18th March 2006) and sound no longer works for me.

/proc/asound/cards:

0 [CMI8738MC6     ]: CMI8738-MC6 - C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6
                     C-Media PCI CMI8738-MC6 (model 55) at 0xb800, irq 201

The only thing I can get working is a test sound with aplay so the card is definitely detected, modules are loaded and alsa works (sort of). I needed to add an /etc/asound.conf so that it would set my card correctly as default:

/etc/asound.conf:

pcm.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.!default {
type hw
card 0
}

I can't get any other applications to produce sound though. I'm testing under KDE and have tried switching arts on and off and tried a variety of apps including mplayer, amarok, xine, artsplay, kaffeine etc
