My laptop (a Dell 700m) suffers from a similar issue, but only under
specific circumstances.

If the laptop goes to sleep with the lid closed and then wakes with it
open, the problem occurs. That is, /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state
continues to indicate that the lid is closed.

When using gnome-power-manager to put the machine to sleep on lid close,
this is quite an annoyance.

I am running dapper, with linux-image-2.6.15-19-686

I'll be filing a separate kernel bug on this matter, but wanted to
comment here in case it is related.
