I have tested Crystal 1.0.0 (as suggested by Riddell) and can confirm substantial improvement. You can not disbale background transparency

BTW, I have used .deb package which conflict with kwin-crystal-style and have removed it, but this was a mistake as kubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-default-settings was removed. After reboot my KDE desktop was complete mess and could not get it back to normal (even if I remove crystal and reinstall k-d and k-d-s), I should have probably ue dpkg-divert and divert the offending files provided by multiple packages.
You are probably safer to wait for Kubuntu develeopers to proparly include Crystal 1.0.0
