Disregard this bug -- turns out it was a corruption in the FAT32 filesystem on the disk that was causing the problem. Running dosfsck on the disk seems to have fixed it. -- Browsing USB hard drive with Konqueror makes it readonly https://launchpad.net/bugs/71284
