I only recently learned of the procedure above.  So no, my view mode
icons were not there (whether it be one or three icons) because of that.
In Breezy as I recall, I always had the three view mode icons by default
... or so I thought.  When I upgraded to Dapper (via apt-get dist-
upgrade) the problems started.  Sometimes, the icons would appear (like
after a reboot or re-login) and sometimes they wouldn't.  It seemed very
random.  I rarely reboot or re-login so I didn't notice it all that
much.  I was just happy when all three of them were there.

So you say they've returned by default in Edgy?  Probably just the one
icon though?
