I have installed kubuntu on a new machine. The bug was not present at the beginning but appeared after a few reboot.
I had always appended the following option in the "kernel" line of /boot/grub/menu.lst:
vga=791
After removing this option the bug disappeared (this also happened on another machine).
I have also noted that when the bug is present the tty fonts are *not* the same as they are without the bug.
Without the bug the fonts are like in dapper, but some programs like 'mc' look strange and garbled. When the bug is present the tty fonts are different, but the 'mc' panels are correctly displayed.
