Just a few questions to help this along:

1. What version of Kubuntu are you using? (i.e., 5.10, 6.06(.1), 6.10 -
Breezy, Dapper, and Edgy respectfully)

2. What version of KDE are you running? (i.e., 3.5.2, 3.5.3, 3.5.4)

3. What version of Kopete? (i.e., 0.11, 0.12)

This problem hasn't been present for me with Dapper (KDE 3.5.2, 3.5.3,
3.5.4) or Edgy (3.5.3, 3.5.4).
