[Bug 102298] Shutdown via kde does not work

I am running Kubuntu Feisty (last upated 03 April 2007). When I select
"shutdown" from within KDE, KDE seems to kill itself as expected but
once the Kubuntu splash screen appears the system seems to go into an
infinite loop. Occasionally, the status bar is briefly shown but most of
the time it is empty. The splash screen flickers every so often as if it
is being re-loaded. The system fails to shut down - I have to pull the
battery out of my laptop. The problem doesn't seem to occur when
rebooting.

If I open a terminal within KDE and type "halt" then the system shuts
itself down without complaining.
