Ubuntu has a bad monitor detection bug (bug 3731) that fails to detect
your monitor's refresh rates.  The work around is to manually set
HorizSync and VertRefresh in the Monitor section of your xorg.conf
appropriate to your monitor.   See bug 3731 for more discussion on this.
