Thanks for the update .. I am trying it with amarok 1.4.5 and will post results here. It still hasn't completed the scan .... 
So far it has crashed twice ... once at 7% and again at 43%, but that might have been due to some issues with the network shares.
I have re-arranged my samba shares, blown out the old mySql database and have started the scan again. 
I will report on the progress.
