OK, I finally figured out what the problem is.  I had "kvim -f %f" set
as the external editor but I don't have kvim installed.  When I disabled
the external editor it worked.  It would be nice if there was a
graphical dialog box displayed if it is unable to launch the external
editor.  If the user launched kmail from a toolbar they would have no
clue as to why they can't compose an e-mail.
