Sorry but I just did a reinstall to clear the problem. It hasn't reoccurred 
again. I was setting up a new install. I tried to install the sun java demo 
from the repositories. Then I found it was installed but had locked up the 
whole system. As I am new to Kubuntu I am afraid i took the easy way out. 
Grovelling apologies. I haven't dived into the shell yet.
