UPDATE:

Tried again when I got home from my laptop... tracks play just fine.  2
differences:

- inside my network instead of over VPN
- connection detected by Bonjour/mDNS instead of connect via specific IP address

Note that in spite of the above differences, playing tracks DID work
until recently over my VPN connection using a specified IP address
rather than Bonjour.  I don't know why it stopped working.
