I eventually manually upgraded from the command line (changed repos and
did dist-upgrade and upgrade until it was done).  This caused an
exciting moment when it dropped out with dpkg errors because the root
partition had become mounted read only.  I remounted rw, and it finished
up fine.  System has run fine and Adept has worked fine since.    Guess
I'll report back when Gusty comes out.
