Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: adept-manager
It ought to be clear before installing new packages where they came
from. It is possible to expand the package description in order to
facilitate install decisions, but inclusion of the missing Type, URL,
Distribution and Component filters would make things a fair amount
easier.
For example, it is generally preferable to install components from the
'main' component, rather than 'multiverse', if support and a relative
guarantee of documentation is desired. However, the sources.list file
either has the whole repository classification enabled or disabled -
multiverse, universe, main, security, etc. It can become uncomfortably
easy to install unsupported packaging and later regret it. Needless to
say, I have been there: it can be inconveniently time-consuming to find
out what is asquew and set things right. Perhaps others have this
experience, too.
Please consider adding those filters alongside Search and Show in the
Active Filters section of the Adept GUI. To prevent the inevitable
clutter that could ensue on in the window, drop-down menus with check
boxes might be an optimal solution. Indeed, menus could be otherwise be
optionally integrated into the main menu bar, rather than taking up
screen space. A new option in the Settings menu to put filters into a
Filters menu, in place (or as well as in other widgets), would make it
easier to align usage in Aptitude and Adept. That way, users arguably
may become less worried by using a text-only interface in place of
Adept's GUI.
This issue sees me using apt-get on occasion, which is not a problem,
but if everyone was happy with apt on its own, Adept and Aptitude
probably would not have been coded.
