I'm having the same problem, but I'm getting a permission denied error
when making the symlink:

mike at mike:~$ sudo mv /etc/X11/xkb/ /etc/X11/xkb_bak
Password:
mike at mike:~$ sudo ln -s /usr/share/X11/xkb -> /etc/X11/xkb
bash: /etc/X11/xkb: Permission denied

Also, /etc/X11/xkb is far from empty:
