I have a similar effect on my PC with Kubuntu 7.04 release version. I
have it set to autologin, and if I select shutdown the screen goes black
until just before it switches off and the down splash appears for about
1/2 a second.

However, if I log out first and select shutdown from the login manager,
the down slash always works. Also if I log out and back in, and then
select shutdown, the down splash works.

I know its only a visual effect, but it could make someone panic and
start hitting keys.
