Same problem here:
Laptop XPS M1330
Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (snd-hda-intel model=3stack)
Kubuntu Gutsy (Beta)

Muting doesn't work while lowering and increasing does work fine.
