Xinerama is no longer supported by the -intel driver and in fact does
not run with those settings. Instead, for -intel you must use Xrandr to
configure multiple screens. For Kubuntu I think this may still need to
be done manually; some tutorials are available on the web for this,
including http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12 and
http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/dualhead.html.
This change is one reason we have deprecated displayconfig-gtk for
Ubuntu/GNOME (other drivers have also switched from Xinerama to Xrandr
and thus have the same problem). A GUI tool for GNOME for configuring
multiple monitors is in the works; I can't say yet if it will make the
cut for Hardy, but at least will be going in for 8.04.1. I don't know
what Kubuntu's plan is for Xrandr support, but they'll need a
corresponding capability.
Meanwhile, if kde-guidance will continue to be used for Kubuntu, it
would be recommended that it test for the Xrandr extension, and if
present, to refuse to configure Xinerama.
