I have this issue too.

I upgraded from gutsy to hardy alpha6 and I experienced it.
Now with a fresh install of kubuntu hardy beta it's the same problem.

But when I get the blank screen, I can switch to tty1-6

I use compiz and nvidia-glx driver, and i'm up-to-date
