i can confirm this bug in Kubuntu hardy KDE 3.5.9.
I can't see mounted hard disk icons on desktop eventhough enabled through Configure Kdesktop -> Behavior -> Device Icons->mounted hard disk volume.

However, when i plugin a USB flash drive, i suddenly see all mounted
hard disk volumes icons on desktop as well as the USB flash drive icon
