I got this error and some more:
I recently updated to KUbuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and somehow got the X up and running in low res. When I log in to my administrator account I get the following pop-up message: 
<<KDEinit could not launch "/usr/bin/boincmgr">>
The problem is, that when I close the message pop-up, I get authomatically kicked out of my session to the graphical login screen. If I just minimize the pop-up, I can still operate in my session.
The program "boincmgr" is a distributed computing software used for sharing CPU time over the internet for projects such as SETI and LHC. However, as I see in this thread, people are having similar trouble with other executables, not just this one.
