To be quite sure this was not due to something I may have done tampering
with the system, I have made a clean install from fresh iso file
downloaded today (checked the md5 sum). REsult: no connection to
unprotected network, (However, network manager "sees" the network.)

Since I have a dual boot system, I was able to check that the wifi
connection is fine on windows XP
