I was dropped back to VT7 (active KDE3 session) when I quit from VT9
(KDE4 session). (I don't know if it is Splash or something else that
occupies VT8.) I am on Kubuntu Hardy.

Do you have exact steps to reproduce the issue? Did you have an active
session or KDM open on VT7? Had you perhaps manually switched to VT8 and
from there to VT9 earlier, and then were returned to the "last used" VT?
Does this still occur for you?
