I think Tom Arnold's idea would do the trick.
And as Renaud OLGIATI said it's probably also a good idea to take a look how other distro's solve the problem.

We don't need to query the Serial Port to know _exactly_ what kind of
Serial Mouse we're using. If we could at least discover that the user is
using *any* serial mouse that will solve 99% of the cases.
