I have the same problem with my "nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600 GT (rev a1)".
That's really curious. Maybe it's only a problem of new nVidia graphic cards, because on my laptop with an nVidia GeForce 5, compiz is not crashing when I open the kopete message window. And the GeForce 5 also needs the driver nvidia-glx-new.

And this is not only a problem of compiz. The same problem appears if
you are using visual effects with kompmgr or something like that. A bug
report to this issue has been filed on
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100020 . This report also links to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2594 . So it looks like a
problem of Xorg.
