The way I interpret this bug is that it must be a duplicate of bug 61711. 
As mentioned in my earlier post, removing splash from the kernel parameters helped for me, as did editing /etc/usplash.conf to the correct values (1280x800 instead of 1280x1024). The right values aren't being set when installing from the Kubuntu Gutsy live-CD.

I don't have the machine available right now for a bootchart/lspci dump,
but it wouldn't add much... But you're probably addressing the bug
reporter -which is not me- anyway ;-)
