usr: I guess I mixed up things. You don't need to have KDE 4 installed
(I don't have it either), you only need Qt4, and the Qt3 and Qt4 version
of QtCurve engine. To change your Qt4 style, you should use qtconfig
(from the qt4-qtconfig package) and select the QtCurve style. If you
have it as your KDE style too, the Qt3 and Qt4 apps will have (almost)
the same look. You can do the same for Gtk2 apps if you install the
appropriate package and make your gtk apps use the QtCurve style.

kde-style-qtcurve - This is a set of widget styles for KDE3 based apps
gtk2-engines-qtcurve - This is a set of widget styles for Gtk2 based apps
kde4-style-qtcurve - Unified widget style for KDE and GTK+ - plain Qt 4 version
qtcurve - This is a set of widget styles for KDE3 and Gtk2 based apps

Please note that kde4-style-qtcurve doesn't depends on KDE4, so you
don't have to worry about that.

I agree with you that this should be configured by default, the gtk-qt-
engine that ships with kubuntu looks absolutely horrible, and the qt4
apps look bad too.
