I guess the only definitive solution to this issue is to use the
wstephens branch for kppp
(http://websvn.kde.org/branches/work/~wstephens/kppp/) and create a
package for kubuntu. Volunteers?

BTW, Has anyone tried to reproduce this error  in kde 4?
