I'm using Kubuntu 8.04 fully updated as of 2008-05-26 and confirm this
problem still exists. I do not have the Composite extension enabled in
my xorg.conf. I have yet to see a single YouTube video work correctly,
including the one erythrocyte reported always worked. I can confirm that
YouTube hosted videos are visible via Google video search, so the
problem depends on how the video is embedded in the web page; some ways
of embedding a given video work and other ways of embedding the same
source fail. I wonder if the failure is a race condition or otherwise
related to CPU speed. My machine is quite slow (1.6Ghz VIA) and always
fails. Others have reported occasional successes and it is a good chance
they are using faster hardware.
