I am having the same issue with a Kubuntu 8.10

To reply to Chris Coulson :
1. actions taken :
   activating the medibuntu tree :
        wget -q http://fr.packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
        sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
   open adept (or synaptic)
   reload the package list
   search for a "non standard package" that is only in the medibuntu repository (e.g.: skype) (see attached screenshot)
2. behaviour expected :
   adept (or synaptic) should show me the package so I can select it to install it
3. the behaviour encountered :
   it does not show me the package

the thing is if I do for example :
   $ apt-cache search skype
   skytools - Skype database tools - Python parts
   skype - A VoIP software - Medibuntu package
   skype-common - A VoIP software - common files - Medibuntu package
   skype-static - A VoIP software - static variant - Medibuntu package
   skype-static-oss  - A VoIP software - static-oss variant - Medibuntu package
   $ ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
   medibuntu.list
This tells me that the medibuntu repository is there and active !
