I could imagine to have a script, which locks the desktop ("qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver Lock") and then does the hibernation (through "pm-hibernate").
Then, use this script instead of the menu item.

I agree that a fix for this would be nice in Intrepid.
