Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: kmix
I recently installed 8.10 beta (fresh install), updated daily.
I have a HP Pavilion laptop.
On 8.04 the multimedia volume keys on my laptop (Volume+ and Volume-) used to bring up an on-screen popup showing the volume level, and changing the volume level of a few % each press.
Now in 8.10 I get a strange behavior. Out of the box, after
installation, the keys would bring up the OSD showing the volume level,
but not change it. I made some experiments in the "System Settings /
Keyboard and mouse / Keyboard shortcuts" screen. Here's what I found:
If I assign the volume keys to "Decrease Volume" and "Increase Volume":
- The PCM channel slider in the mixer moves up and down at each keypress; other channels are unchanged
- The OSD appears but the value shown doesn't change;
- The small speaker icon on the panel doesn't change its aspect.
If I assign the keys to "Decrease Volume - Front" and "Increase Volume - Front":
- The Front channel slider in the mixer moves up and down at each keypress; the other channels are unchanged
- The OSD doesn't come onscreen. But if I bring it up with i.e. the "Mute" key, I can see it reflects the "Front" slider value.
- The small speaker icon on the panel changes (it goes from a speaker with 3 waves to a speaker with no waves).
In either way, the actual sound output is changed, because both channels
need to be up to have maximum volume.
So it seems that
- the "Bring up the OSD" command is tied to the PCM channel;
- the actual value shown in the OSD is tied to the Front channel;
- the icon on the panel is tied to the Front channel.
This is confusing...
